THE HISTORY

The Valle d’Aosta is no less intriguing as regarding its history, its most important attractions being the following:

• Saint Martin de Corléans’ megalithic centre in Aosta, which will be opened to the visitors in 2013. Archaeologists are currently working to bring the whole site into day-light, thereby helping to answer a number of questions that surround it. Once inside, one will admire steles from around 5.000 B.C.

• the numerous traces of the ancient Roman civilization, like the Arch of Augustus (Arco d’ Augusto), the theatre and Aosta’s historic city centre, with its orthogonal network of streets, so typical of ancient Roman cities.

• the numerous castles which lie along the central and some lateral valleys.

The Valle d’Aostan flag – black and red – is reminiscent of the Challant Coat of Arms.
